My Pictures of

The 8th Annual Trenton Bicycle Tour

May 22, 2004

I rode in the Trenton Bicycle Tour, sponsored by the Trenton Cycling Revolution. About 50 people went on the tour. We went as a group and were escorted by Trenton police officers on bicycles, motorcycles, and cars. They stopped traffic and allowed us to stay together through intersections.

The tour is a 15 mile loop starting from the Barracks Museum. Since we stayed together, it was a slow ride - it took over three hours to do the 15 miles!

I rode to the tour start and back on my bike. That added another 10 miles. Of course, this was without a police escort!

The rest of the story is in the pictures below.

Trenton Tour The tour started from the Trenton Barracks. These Barracks were built in the 1760s and are where the Hessians were partying when Washington and the Continental Army attacked them in 1776 after crossing the Delaware River on Christmas. Trenton Tour Another view of the Barracks.
Trenton Tour And yet another shot of the Barracks. Trenton Tour Getting ready to start. Marshalls are wearing orange vests and trenton police riding along with us have blue shirts. (The Trenton Police Bike Patrol was abolished several years ago, so this is something of an unofficial bike patrol duty.)
Trenton Tour We started out riding a few blocks in downtown Trenton and then riding along the Delaware River. Trenton Tour Waterfront Park (as the sign says!).
Trenton Tour We're still riding downstream along the river and coming up on a state office building. Trenton Tour A view into Waterfront Park, the home of the AA Trenton Thunder, a farm team of the New York Yankees.
Trenton Tour We rode up a ramp to a gazebo in Riverwalk Park. Here's the view back towards the Trenton Thunder Stadium with cyclists coming towards the ramp. Trenton Tour Riders waiting in the gazebo for others to catch up.
Trenton Tour A view of the park. Trenton Tour I think she was our second youngest "on your own bike, pedalling by yourself" rider. Her sister was the youngest rider.
Trenton Tour One of our police escorts. Trenton Tour A fisherman on the Delaware River.
Trenton Tour We continued down River Walk Park. Trenton Tour We rode through Riverview Cemetery.

Trenton Tour The base of the Battle Monument, erected in 1893 to commemorate Washington's victory at the Battle of Trenton. Trenton Tour The top of the Battle Monument. Washington is pointing to the site of his victory. Note the observation platform.
Trenton Tour A view of the park in front of the monument. The tour had a rest stop in the park. Trenton Tour Another view of the Battle Monument Park and the rest stop.
Trenton Tour The state capitol as seen from the top of the Battle Monument. The time is roughly 10:30 am, so the shadows say the direction is roughly southwest. Trenton Tour Broad Street on the left and Warren Street on the right. View to the south from the Battle Monument.
Trenton Tour View to the southeast from the Battle Monument. Trenton Tour View to the north from the Battle Monument. Jane and I live way off in the distance.
Trenton Tour View roughly to the west from the Battle Monument. Trenton Tour A close up of the rest stop. Can you tell there are bananas, apples, cookies, and pretzels on the table to the left? Also water and lemon drink.
Trenton Tour Looking straight down from the top of the Battle Monument. Trenton Tour Riders at the rest stop with the Battle Monument in the background.
Trenton Tour After leaving the Battle Monument we rode "upstream" on the Delaware and Raritan Canal towpath. Trenton Tour Here's a shot I took over my shoulder of the riders behind me. The canal can just barely be made out through the trees on the left.
Trenton Tour We left the canal and regrouped on Lower Ferry Road. The fence on the right is the railing on the bridge over the canal. Trenton Tour We rode to Cadwalader park for the second rest stop. Here are some riders arriving at the rest stop.
Trenton Tour More riders arriving at the rest stop. Trenton Tour More riders.
Trenton Tour Even more riders. Trenton Tour The set up at the rest stop in Cadwalader Park.
Trenton Tour Our motorcycle escort arrives at the rest stop. He and others stopped traffic at intersections so we could ride through as a group. Trenton Tour There were some small hills on the way from the canal to the park and the group really stretched out. Here are some more riders arriving at the rest stop.
Trenton Tour He took a shortcut through the park! Trenton Tour Our second youngest pedaller arrives. Her sister hitched a ride in the police car!
Trenton Tour On the way back from Cadwalader Park, we rode along West State Street which has some pretty elegant old homes. Trenton Tour There are also some elegant churches on West State Street.
Trenton Tour The tour finished behind the Barracks. Trenton Tour On the way home from the tour, I came across this drill team (the something Debs) performing and collecting donations.
