Fall Colors Ride XI

October 28, 2007

On October 28, 2007 we had a Fall Colors Ride XI on the path along the D&R feeder canal next to the Delaware River. We went from Washington Crossing to Lambertville to Frenchtown and back. On the way back, we rode on the sholder of Route 29 from Frenchtown to Prallsville Mills. Our total for the day was 45.5 miles.

Our group this year included Norm Jarosik, a researcher in the physics department, physics graduate students Arvind Murugan, Colin Parker, and Audrey Sederberg, electrical engineering graduate student YenTing Chiu, and me, Ed Groth.

The day was clear and cold. We had a headwind on the way out, but a tailwind on the way back.

This fall the weather has been strange: one cold week, but summer-like the rest of the time. Presumably, this is why only a few of the trees had turned by the time of the ride (you'll notice from the photos that most of the fall colors are green!).

The rest of the story is in the pictures below.

Since there had been a lot of rain the few days previously (we had postponed the ride to the rain date), the river was quite high and running over the dam. Often we can walk out on the damn, but not this time!
Fall Colors Ride, 2007 We took a break at Bulls Island, about 13 miles from the start of the ride. Here are YenTing and Arvind replenishing their energy stores. Fall Colors Ride, 2007 YenTing, me, and Colin at Bulls Island.

He had left us to ride up Federal Twist Road (a good workout!) and is just rejoining us. Behind Norm is NJ. Fall Colors Ride, 2007 Upstream on the Delaware River from the footbridge.
Fall Colors Ride, 2007 Downstream on the Delaware River from the footbridge. Fall Colors Ride, 2007 All along the bridge are spider webs like this one. Pretty smart spiders: the wind blows mainly along the river, perpendicular to the bridge, and the spiders have put up their webs to catch whatever the wind blows through!

Unfortunately, my camera conked out before I could take any more photos. (The imager stopped working-later a good whack brought it back to life.) We had lunch in Lambertville at the Lambertville Station.
