Fall Colors Ride IV

October 15, 2000

On October 15,2000 we had a Fall Colors Ride IV on the path along the D&R canal next to the Delaware River. We went from Scudders Falls to Lambertville to Frenchtown, then crossed the river to Uhlerstown and rode to New Hope on the towpath of the Delaware Canal on the Pennsylvania side of the river. We joined up with my wife Jane for lunch in New Hope and then returned to the New Jersey side for the ride back to the starting point. The total was 51 miles!

Participants included Geoff Facer, a postdoc in the physics department, Dan Angelescu and Denis Barkats, graduate students, Denis' friend Michelle Yeh, an environmental engineer, and me, Ed Groth. Although it was a small group, it was a beautiful day for riding and everyone had a good time.

START 1 Here is the start, where I95 crosses the Delaware at Scudders Falls. In this shot you can see the backsides of Geoff, Denis, and Michelle! START 2 Geoff, Michelle, and Dan watch Denis install a front wheel.
TRAIL 1 Geoff and Denis riding north on the trail. TRAIL 2 They are followed by Michelle and Dan.
AGROUND About a mile south of Lambertville, we walked out into the Delaware on the wing dam. This (we found out later) is a tour boat normally anchored at New Hope. Somehow it got loose and drifted down the river where it got caught on these rocks. The lines are to keep it from going further. I suppose the owners are waiting for the river to rise so they can get it off the rocks and bring it home. DELAWARE Still on the wing dam, Michelle and Denis look north. The bridge connects New Hope on the left with Lambertville on the right.
FRENCHTOWN We made it to Frenchtown, 25 miles from where we started. Here are Michelle, Denis, me, and Geoff. ON BRIDGE That's Frenchtown in the background. From front to back it's Geoff, Denis, Dan, and Michelle. We're crossing the river to Uhlerstown.
OLD LOCK Riding about a half mile from the river at Uhlerstown, we get to a covered bridge crossing the Delaware Canal and towpath. The covered bridge is just behind us (I forgot to take a picture). Denis, Michelle, and Geoff are eamining an abandoned lock on the Delaware Canal. Dan is just out of the picture trying to wash off some poison ivy! CONSTRUCTION We rode south on the Pennsylvania side on the Delaware Canal towpath. PA has upgraded the towpath recently, so it's a pretty good ride. However, there's one spot where they are still working on the aquaduct carrying the canal over a creek. We had to ride on Route 32 for a few tenths of a mile. Here's some of the construction where the path temporarily ended.
SHOVEL Denis and Dan? Peas in a pod? Boys will be boys? What's your favorite caption? TRAIL 3 Geoff heading south just past the footbridge which connects Bulls Island in New Jersey (on the right) to Lumberville, PA (on the left).
TRAIL 4 Followed by Dan. TRAIL 5 Followed by Denis.
TRAIL 6 Followed by Michelle who seems to be showing off her aero racing style! END 1 Six miles south of Lumberville we stopped for lunch in New Hope. Jane took some pictures which I will post as soon as they are processed. After lunch we crossed to the New Jersey side and continued another 10 miles or so back to where we started. Here's Geoff at the end. He was planning to go play ultimate frisbee!
END 2 Dan gets ready to pack up his bike. END 3 Me at the end.
END 4 It seems that 50 miles wiped out Denis. It's a good thing Michelle can hold him up!
