It's Almost Summer Bike Ride VIII

June 18, 2005

On June 18, 2005 we had an It's Almost Summer Bike Ride VIII on the path along the D&R canal from Princeton (Washington Road) to Blackwells Mills and back. On the way back, we stopped in Kingston and had lunch at Good Time Charley's.

The ride was a 24 mile round trip.

Along for the ride were Robin and Susan Dawson (Susan is the former business manager of the Physics department, and is now the manager of the Astrophysics Department), Professor Chiara Nappi, her husband Ed Witten and her son Rafi, postdoc Joakim Bergli, physics graduate students Lu Li and Amol Upadhye and me, Ed Groth.

The rest of the story is in the pictures below.

Almost Summer Ride, VIII I'm not sure what happened to this photo. In any case, this is Amol, Joakim, Susan, Robin and Lu getting ready at the start on Washington Road. The plan was to meet Chiara and family at Kingston. Almost Summer Ride, VIII Just before Kingston, we came across Jackson (physics grad student) with a neat sign! Thanks, Jackson!
Almost Summer Ride, VIII We stopped to admire the Griggstown Lock. Here are Chiara, Susan and Robin. Almost Summer Ride, VIII Lu studies something in the fence, Rafi and Ed are in the back, and Amol and Joakim look upstream.
Almost Summer Ride, VIII The actual lock. In real life (close to a hundred years ago), there would have been working gates at both ends. Now the canal is used as an aqueduct to supply water to the central part of the state, so there's only a lift gate at one end (which as far as I can tell is never used!). Almost Summer Ride, VIII Joakim followed by Amol on the trail.

Almost Summer Ride, VIII Rafi and Chiara wait for others before heading up route 27 to Good Time Charley's in Kingston where we had lunch. I forgot to take a picture at lunch, so this is the end. After lunch, there was just a little riding to do to get back to Washington Road where my van was parked.
