It's Almost Summer Bike Ride VI

June 28, 2003

On June 28, 2003 we had an It's Almost Summer Bike Ride VI on the path along the D&R canal from Kingston to New Brunswick and back. When we got back to Kingston, we had lunch at Good Time Charley's.

The ride was a 44 mile round trip.

We tried to have the ride on the 21st, but were rained out, then rained out again on the 22nd. We finally got it in on the 28th. Along for the ride were Robin Dawson (husband of Susan Dawson, the former physics department business manager), postdoc Pat McDonald and friend Laura Wagner, graduate students Eric Dahl, Gaspar Tkacik, and Amol Upadhye and me, Ed Groth.

Ride, June 28, 2003 Getting ready for the ride at the parking lot next to the towpath in Kingston: Robin is to the left, Laura and Pat on the right, and Eric, Gaspar, and Amol are in the background. Ride, June 28, 2003 We took a break at "Ten Mile Lock." Here are Laura, Pat, Amol and Robin.
Ride, June 28, 2003 Pat, Laura, and Robin cross one of the spillways where overflow from the canal on the left can flow into the river (out of the picture) on the right. From Kingston, the canal runs along the Millstone River and then the Raritan River after the Millstone runs into the Raritan. Ride, June 28, 2003 Eric at the Landing Lane bridge just before the towpath ends.
Ride, June 28, 2003 Laura and Pat at the end (turn around point) of the path. The canal flows into the Raritan at this point and route 18 is in the background. Ride, June 28, 2003 Gaspar, Amol, and Eric in front of Laura and Pat at the end of the path.
Ride, June 28, 2003 Robin at the end. The vegetation is really green and growing due to all the rain we've had recently. Ride, June 28, 2003 There was a construction zone at one of the two places where the path goes under Interstate 287.
Ride, June 28, 2003 More construction. Ride, June 28, 2003 Gaspar and Eric on the path.
Ride, June 28, 2003 Amol and Pat riding on the path. Some other cyclists are in the background, and a fisherman is at the far right. Ride, June 28, 2003 We took a break at Ten Mile Lock on the way back as well. Here Eric arrives at the lock.
Ride, June 28, 2003 Laura and Pat take a break. I think it was at this point Laura asked if I had any repeat riders, since she thought the ride was too hard! Ride, June 28, 2003 After about 44 miles, we made it back to Kingston where we had lunch at Good Time Charley's. That's Laura. Pat, Eric, Amol, Gaspar, and Robin.
