It's Almost Summer Bike Ride IV

June 16, 2001

On June 16, 2001 we had an It's Almost Summer Bike Ride IV on the path along the D&R canal from Kingston to New Brunswick and back. When we got back to Kingston, we had lunch at Good Time Charley's.

The ride was a 44 mile round trip. Some of the participants rode an extra three miles from Princeton, so they had about 50 miles altogether. Tropical Storm Allison was almost here, so it was very humid and overcast during the ride. Towards the end, there was a little light rain.

Participants included Robin and Susan Dawson, Geoff Facer, Jenn and Joe Fowler, Ed Groth (that's me), Lori Paniak, and Eric Prebys.

ME Here, I'm with my bicycle on the van about to set off for the start. PARKING LOT START At the parking lot in Kingston, Jenn and Eric are getting ready. (Joe is just barely visible to the left.) WP1
FLAT 1 Soon after the start of the ride, Joe's rear tire went flat. Here are Jenn, Joe, me and Susan working on the tire. WP2 FLAT 2 Joe, Jenn, and Susan still working on the tire! WP2

This turned out to be the tire from hell. We discovered a thorn in the tire and a hole in the tube where the thorn poked through. Since there was no extra tube, we had to patch the hole. It turns out it was a slime tube so this was non-trivial. When we tried to pump it back up, the valve kept receding into the rim. We never did figure out why. However, this led us to take the tube out and start over. Then we got it pumped up and discovered that it was leaking through the valve. Having a canal nearby is handy for finding leaks! We tried tightening the valve core, but no go. Then Susan volunteered her spare tube (for a 700c hybrid tire rather than a mountain bike tire). We got it in and pumped vigorously, but it didn't seem to be holding air. We took it out, and discovered a slit along the tube seam. Then we decided to try my spare tube, a presta valve, narrow 700c tube. We got it in, and pumped up OK, but we must have left a part pinched somewhere because about a mile down the path, there was a bang and a hiss and Joe was flat again. Since we were only a couple of miles from the Dawson's, Sue decided to ride back to their house and get their car while Joe walked back to the intersection. They took Joe's bike to a shop to get tubes. Then they returned to the trail and rode to find the rest of us on the way back.

FLAT 3 A few miles farther, Robin had a flat. Fortunately, he had a spare tube (the only one we hadn't thrown at Joe's tire!) and the repair was more or less routine. Lori, Robin, Geoff, and Jenn work on the tire. WP3 END 1 After 22 miles, we reached the end! Here are Robin and Eric (behind the tree on cell phones) and Geoff and Lori where the path ends near New Brunswick. WP4
END 2 Lori, Jenn, Robin, and Geoff taking a break at the end. WP4 END 3 Robin and I changed places! WP4
RENDESVOUZ On the way back, we encountered Susan and Joe, coming the other way. Robin and Geoff are to the right. WP5 PARKING LOT END Joe and Jenn put their bikes away back at the Kingston parking lot. Eric waited at Bound Brook for his son Jake to join him and ride the last 16 miles. We never did see him again, but since it started to rain real hard just after the rest of us got back to Kingston, they may have decided to cut the ride short! WP1
LUNCH Robin, Joe, Geoff, Jenn, and Lori have lunch at Good Time Charley's in Kingston after the ride's over. MAP Here is a portion of a USGS 250K scale map. The route is the dark red and black line (ignore the red line ending at waypoint 1). Locations where pictures were taken are indicated by waypoints 1-5 and indicated in each figure caption. Here is the file (altitudes in meters; a very flat ride!). The segment showing us going through the river is apparently one of the places where my Garmin eTrex Summit turned itself off when I hit a bump.
