Fall Colors Ride

October 4, 1997

We had a Fall Colors Ride on October 4, 1997. Nine people from the department showed up and rode all 50 miles. Also, we met up with John Crawford for part of the way. Charlotte and Ed Richick also tried to meet up with us, but we were so far behind schedule, we never did make the connection! It seems that the riding was slower and the rests were longer than I planned. This cost about an hour. Jim had a flat which we tried to repair several times and then gave up. This cost another hour. Then finding the car, getting back to pick up Jim and finding another place to park, etc., cost another hour. So we sat down to eat at about 4pm instead of 1pm. But, despite the delays, I think all had a good time. Except Jane-she was waiting for us at the Landing and had some kind of argument with the patio host!

Ride 04-Oct-97 1 Here we are at the start. This is just north of the Scudders Falls Bridge where I95 crosses the Delaware River. Ride 04-Oct-97 2 Here we are riding. This is the old rail line that's been converted to a nice walking/jogging/cycling path. Note the canal on the right. You might have to look carefully as it's reflecting some of the fall colors!
Ride 04-Oct-97 3 Rest stop at the Bull Island Recreational Area. This is roughly 15 miles from the start. Some of the folks crossed the Delaware on the pedestrian bridge to check out Lumberville, PA. Ride 04-Oct-97 4 Trying to fix Jim's flat. We tried, but going flat on a rough surface produces lots of pinch holes. This happened after we made it to Frenchtown (25 miles) and turned around, so it's maybe 28-30 miles into the ride.
Ride 04-Oct-97 5 When we all got back to Lambertville, we crossed the Delaware to New Hope and had a late lunch at the Landing. For some reason (part of Jane's argument with the host) they couldn't seat us all together. So we had a "kid's table" with (clockwise from the multicolored jacket) Morten Krogh, Ilya Nemenman, Chang Chan, Akakii Melikidze, Olexei Motrunich, and Edna Cheung, all graduate students in the department. Ride 04-Oct-97 6 And here is the "adult's table" with Jim Peebles, Michele Limon, and Jane. From the start to Frenchtown and back to New Hope is about 40 miles leaving 10 to go.
