It's Almost Summer Bike Ride III

June 17, 2000

On June 17, 2000 we had an It's Almost Summer Bike Ride III on the path along the D&R canal from Kingston to New Brunswick and back. When we got back to Kingston, we had lunch at Good Time Charley's.

The ride was a 43 mile round trip. Some of the participants rode an extra three miles from Princeton, so they had about 50 miles altogether. It was sunny, hot and humid during the ride. But due to recent wet weather, the path was muddy in spots. The tires would sink into the mud and it made for tough going.

Participants included Costin Bontas (rising--means next year--sophomore), Robin and Susan Dawson, Charles Dumont (rising senior), Geoff Facer (postdoc), Sunil Goda (rising senior), Ed Groth (that's me), Toby Marriage (just graduated), Don Priour (about to finish grad school), Marc Schreiber (rising junior), Erik Sherwood (just graduated, in math!), and Dave and Eunice Wilkinson.

Start Here we are at the parking lot in Kingston getting ready to go. On the Trail 1 Here we are on the trail fairly close to the beginning. Eunice is in the lead followed by Costin, Dave, and Robin.
On the Trail 2 Next comes Don, Marc and Geoff, and behind them Erik and Sunil. On the Trail 3 And here come Toby, Charles, and part of Erik.
Rest stop It was very hot, so there were a lot of rest stops. This is on the way out. It might be next to "Ten Mile Lock." Closest to the camera is Robin, then Susan, then Eunice... End 1 Here's the group at the far end. On the left, Charles has the green jersey and Toby is next to him. The other face you can make out belongs to Sunil. Everyone else is looking the other way!
End 2 Another shot of the group - this time with more faces towards the camera. That's Geoff, Toby, Erik, Ed, Sunil, Marc, Susan, Don, Dave, and Robin behind. Charles took the picture, and Eunice and Costin must be around somewhere. End 3 Looking the other way from where we ended. That's Landing Lane Bridge where the state park officially ends. Beyond this point, the path continues as a rut for a few hundred yards before terminating at a spillway where the canal flows into the Raritan River. We didn't go that last few hundred yards due to the heavy construction on the bridge.
Bound Brook Lock 1 Now we're on the way back. Costin and Robin are taking a rest at the South Bound Brook Lock. Bound Brook Lock 2 Marc arrives at the Bound Brook Lock.
Bound Brook Lock 3 Dave and Eunice arrive at the lock. Bound Brook Lock 4 There was a mulberry tree growing next to trail near the Bound Brook Lock. At least we think it was a mulberry tree. I (that's me) ate about a dozen of the ripe (dark) berries. It was a successful experiment as they tasted good and I suffered no ill effects. Thanks to Eunice Wilkinson for this photo.
Lunch 1 After we got back to the parking lot in Kingston, we had lunch at Good Time Charley's. Along the left side of the table from front to back are Sunil, Erik, Charles, Geoff, Don, and Costin. Marc is on the far right. Lunch 2 Another shot of lunch. From left to right you can make out Charles, Don, Costin, Marc, Dave, Eunice, and Toby. Robin and Susan had another engagement and left us when we went by their house near the Griggstown causeway.
