The Princeton Event

August 4, 2001

The Princeton Freewheelers bicycle club sponsors a set of rides in early August, called the Princeton Event. I've done this ride for the fifth year in a row. In fact, the ride in 1997 was my first organized ride, ever!

This year I did the 35 mile ride which turned out to be identical to the 35 mile route I did in 1997. With riding to and from Rider University in Lawrence Township, NJ, where the rides begin and end, I wound up with 38.4 miles.

READY Here I am at about 8:45 am ready to ride to the start. That passionate pink T-shirt I'm wearing is the FANY ride shirt from the previous week. HEADING OUT Some riders getting ready to head out about 9 am.
PENNY FARTHING A penny-farthing on display at registration. REGISTRATION The registration and route selection desks at Rider University in Lawrence Township, NJ where the rides start and end.
RIDER A rider approaches the intersection of Nursery Road and Bear Tavern Road. MORE RIDERS More riders approach Bear Tavern Road on Nursery Road.
REST At the rest stop at Terhune Orchards owned by our mayor, Pam Mount. VOLUNTEER A hardworking rest stop volunteer at Terhune Orchards.
STEEP There's a short but very steep hill on Pretty Brook Road. Many riders walk the hill. I walked it when I first rode it in 1997 on my old three speed. Now I try to see how many gears up from the lowest I can make it. Today it was two from the bottom. WALKING Now the tandem riders are getting off.
DONE Back at Rider, some riders are taking a rest. VENDORS And the vendor tents at Rider University.
