Great Finger Lakes Bicycle Tour

June 11-13, 1999

On June 11, 1999 we drove to Schenectady to get Jeff, then drove to Watkins Glen, NY and set up camp in the Watkins Glen State Park Hidden Valley Group Camp. This was to participate in the 19th annual Great Finger Lakes Bicycle Tour sponsored by the Southern Tier Bicycle Club.

Setting up camp, registration, and a social occupied Friday evening. Saturday there were various choices of routes. Jeff and I elected to do the 62 mile route which went north near Cayuga lake and south along Seneca lake. We stopped in Ovid for lunch, not realizing that a couple of 100 yards farther we would come across the Ovid Strawberry Festival where lunch could be strawberry shortcake! Further down there was a stop at the Wagner Winery for tasting and purchasing wine.

On Sunday, there was again a choice of routes. Cue sheets were provided for a 16 mile hilly route or a 64 mile rolling route. We chose the 64 mile route. If that's what they call rolls, I don't want to know about hills!

With extra legs to get to the loop on Saturday and a missed turn on Sunday, I wound up with about 137 miles for the weekend! (Jeff did not ride on Sunday.)

Sunday evening, I arrived back in camp just after they had closed and locked the bathrooms and showers! The STBC only reserves the camp through Sunday afternoon. We tried to talk the rangers into letting us stay where we were until Monday morning, but it was no go. So we quickly broke camp and set up again in the regular campgrounds at Watkins Glen State Park. Jane made another nice dinner - the highlight was a cold salmon salad.

On Monday morning, we had breakfast - scrambled eggs and ham, broke camp, and drove to Schenectady. There we took Jeff and Joann out to dinner to celebrate Jeff's birthday. We arrived home Tuesday afternoon.

CAMP Here are Jeff, Jane, and I (right to left) in our camp on Friday evening, June 11. Behind us is our tent and to the left is Jeff's tent. Further behind is one of the cabins where people who dislike tents can stay. JANE, JEFF Here are Jane and Jeff at camp. In the background is Ira Glickstein (who took the previous photo) and his incredibly well behaved dog Toffee. Behind Ira is the building containing bathrooms and showers. (We always find the facilities and pitch our tents not too far away!)
DINNER Getting ready to eat. Jane prepared steak, potatoes, salad (strawberry, spinach, and almond with OJ and mayo dressing - it's really good) and pecan pie for dessert. Behind the trees in the background is the main building of the camp. SOCIAL The "social" held on Friday evening from 9-11. The SBTC served enough food that you didn't need to eat dinner Friday night. But we were stuffed from Jane's dinner!
JEFF, JANE AT SOCIAL Jeff and Jane (and an unidentified cyclist) at the social. TOP OF HILL Some riders getting to the top of a hill on the first morning. The route went south out of Watkins Glen on 14 then turned east on 224 which was a steady climb for the first mile and a half. The climb kept going for a ways longer but wasn't as steep. The loop on Saturday was a 62 mile loop that, counting extra legs to and from camp, wound up as a 67 mile ride.
JEFF ON HILL Jeff cycling up a hill. I believe we're headed northeast on route 228. CAYUTA LAKE Looking roughly southeast over Cayuta Lake. I'm not sure whether Cayuta qualifies as a finger lake or not! It's a very small lake just between the southern tips of Seneca and Cayuga lakes.
CAYUGA LAKE AND FARM Lots of farms along the tour! This is on route 96 looking to the east northeast. Cayuga lake is just barely visible. I took this while riding which is my excuse for the tilted horizon! SENECA LAKE Jeff and the view looking southwest over Seneca lake. This is on route 414.
SENECA LAKE, WAGNER WINERY Seneca lake looking northwest from the Wagner vineyards/winery. The deck is just off the tasting rooms. WAGNER WINERY Jeff getting ready to leave the Wagner winery. We tasted some wine and Jeff bought a couple of bottles. The STBC transported all the wine purchased by riders to the camp.
FALLS Some falls on route 414 near the south end of Seneca lake just a few miles north of Watkins Glen. EMPTY TO LAKE Where the falls in the previous shot empty into Seneca lake.
SAILBOATS A couple of sailboats on Seneca lake. This is from the same spot as the two previous photos but looking more or less straight west. SENECA LAKE TO THE NORTH We're on the north side of Watkins Glen on a bridge that carries 414 into town. This is a view of Seneca lake looking north. Lots of utility wires!
MARINA The view from the bridge in the other direction. A marina and more utility lines! JANE AND VIDEO CAM. At camp on Sunday morning, June 13. What is Jane shooting?
JANE SMILING I suppose it was amusing, but probably not funny enough for America's Funniest Home Videos! JEFF, ED, BIKES Here are Jeff and I with our bikes on Sunday morning. The tent in the background was occupied by a very loving couple - so loving that we were surprised they had enough energy to ride!
CAMP ON SUNDAY The camp on Sunday morning. On Sunday, we started on the 64 mile loop. Jeff was too sore to sit and gave up after a couple of miles. I missed a turn and wound up going 70 miles! KEUKA LAKE Keuka lake on Sunday. This view is roughly west from highway 54. Previously, I had ridden up between Seneca and Keuka lakes to Penn Yan where I had lunch in Angel's cafe. This part of the trip is riding back south towards Watkins Glen.
FINGER LAKES SIGN Just in case you wondered about the Finger Lakes! KEUKA LAKE A view of Keuka lake towards the south-southwest.
HILL One of the many hills that had to be climbed on Sunday. I believe this is looking roughly South on route 230. BARN Almost back to the camp at Watkins Glen State Park - just a few miles to go. This is the view to the east. Seneca lake is in the valley before the ridge in the distance.
JEFF SCRAMBLES EGGS We had to move from the group camp to the regular campgrounds on Sunday evening. Here's Jeff fixing some scrambled eggs for breakfast at the new camp site Monday morning. CAMP A general view of the camp. Jeff was so confident in the weather, he didn't bother to put the rainfly over his tent. Jeff is still scrambling the eggs and Jane seems to be hiding in the trees!
