Setting up camp, registration, and a social occupied Friday evening. Saturday there were various choices of routes. I did the 85 mile loop around Lake Seneca.
On Sunday, there was again a choice of routes. I did the 16 mile hilly route. Both of these routes were the same as last year's ride. However, this year, I tried to find the fire tower at the top of the hilly ride. I didn't find it, but my searching added about four miles to the ride.
Also this year I had an eTrex Summit, a GPS unit with altimeter. It showed that the total amount of climbing was about 3400 feet for Saturday's ride and about 1500 feet for Sunday's ride. The camp is around 1000' and the high point on the paved road is about 1900'. On the dirt road to the fire tower (that I didn't find), it got to over 2000'. Lake Seneca is about 450'.
The STBC rents the group campgrounds through Sunday afternoon. So after the short ride Sunday, we broke camp and moved to the regular campgrounds at Watkins Glen State Park. We stayed there Sunday and Monday nights and on Tuesday broke camp and visited our son Jeff in Clifton Park, near Albany. We returned home on Wednesday, June 13.

On Sunday, I did a short but hilly, 16.8 mile loop. Our camp was at an elevation of about 1050'. Here are some riders on route 21 at almost 2000'. WP7 | ![]() |
Another rider on route 21. There was supposed to be a road to a fire tower near here, which I explored looking for the tower. I never found the tower, but I did add about 4 miles to the ride distance. WP7 |

A little farther along on route 21. Towards the east, Lake Seneca is over there somewhere! WP8 | Since I had my GPS with me, at each place I took a picture, I entered a waypoint (8 total). Here is a segment of a USGS 250K scale topographic map with the waypoints plotted. I've also indicated in each picture caption the corresponding waypoint. Finally, here is the waypoint file; altitudes are in meters. |
