Jane and I participated in the first annual FANY ride, July 22-28, 2001. I think FANY stands for "Festival Across New York," but I wouldn't swear to it. In any case, it's pronounced "fanny," as in what gets sore after 500 miles on a bicycle!
Jane and I drove to Niagara Falls on Saturday, July 21 and set up camp and registered. Jane drove our van with our camping gear while I rode across the state with the other riders. We returned from Millerton, NY, near the Connecticut border after the finish of the ride on Sunday, July 28.
It was a tough (for me anyway) ride with lots of hills and with very hot days on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
Jane and I both agreed it was a fun ride as we met and got to know many nice people during the ride.
This table gives a summary of the tour. The mileages are what I read from my odometer at the end of each day. These might be more or less than the official mileages because I got lost, went on a side tour, took a shortcut, or whatever. The total climb is what my eTrek Summit GPS receiver told me before it got smashed in Sherburne.
For the first three days (when I still had the GPS receiver) I was able to save the recorded tracks and waypoints. I've overlaid the tracks and waypoints on USGS topo maps. Waypoints mark places I took one or more photos with the digital camera. The photo captions cross reference the waypoints with WPxx. I've also plotted the altitude and calculated the total climb from the track logs. The altitude data is noisy. I found that if I added each elevation increase that was greater than three feet I could come close to what the GPS receiver calculated. (Of course, I don't know what algorithm the receiver uses nor if it's correct!). Clicking on the thumbnails for the tracks or profiles will give the full size track or profile.
The links in the table are to each day's photo album. A single photo album for all eight days is here, but it may take a while to download as it contains 121 thumbnails. (The links from the full size photos go back to the daily albums, not the master album.)
I'm sure I've made many errors and there are many names I never learned or didn't write down before I forgot. So, if you have a correction, or know some names (especially if you see yourself in a photo), please email me at groth@pupgg.princeton.edu. Thanks!
