Memorial Weekend Camping at Cape May

May 22-25, 1998

On Memorial Day Weekend, Jane and I went camping at the Cape Island Campground in Cape May, New Jersey. We arrived just before dark on Friday, set up camp and had dinner. The next morning we had breakfast and then I went on a 46 mile bike ride in the area. (I didn't take the camera with me - it was a gray overcast day.) Jane worked on her Enigma and did some work around camp. We had a great meal Saturday night - gazpacho, beef fajitas, etc. On Sunday, we had another big breakfast, and then went sight seeing in Cape May. Sunday night, Suzanne Staggs and Jason Puchalla came for dinner. On Monday we broke camp, went out to breakfast and then fought the traffic to get home!

Camp View 1 Here's a view of the camp as we had it set up on Sunday. That's a 4-6 person tent, but Jane thinks it's just barely big enough for the two of us! Camp View 2 Another view of the camp. The picnic table came with the site, but the other table came with us. Through the trees, you can just barely see our neighbors.
Camp View 3 Here's another shot of the camp. Notice the electrical outlet. We didn't know we would have one, so we didn't bring anything to use with the outlet. There was also a water spigot. Flush toilets and coin operated hot showers were just a short walk away. So I guess you wouldn't call this primitive camping! Sunday Supper 1 Here I am with Suzanne and Jason at Sunday Supper. Jane served up fruit salad, Ceasar salad, poppy seed pasta, stuffed tomatos, southern fried catfish, cornbread and pecan pie. Definitely not roughing it!
Sunday Supper 2 Another shot of Sunday supper. This time with Suzanne, Jason, and our chef, Jane. Sunday Supper 3 Yet another view of the Sunday supper. In this shot you can see the "dining room" and, back to the left, the "kitchen."
Washing dishes We made Jason pay for his supper! Back from exercise Monday morning. I'm just back from jogging. Still to do: get cleaned up and break camp.
Breaking Camp Breaking camp: No, I haven't stabbed myself. I'm folding a "shock corded" tent pole. Mounting bike Once the van is loaded, the last step is to install the hitch rack and mount the bike on the rack.

Cape May is famous for its Victorian architecture. Here are some random shots of Victorian homes, a Victorian fire hydrant and even a Victorian bird house!
