My Pictures of

The Five Boro Bike Ride

May 6, 2007

One friend and I and roughly 35,000 other cyclists did the forty-two mile New York Five Boro Ride on May 6, 2007.

Along for this year's ride was Beth Reid, a fifth year physics graduate student.

This was my tenth year in a row doing this ride and it was the first year registration was closed because the ride was full at 35,000 cyclists. It was very crowded. We spent so much time in "scooter mode" (one foot on the ground pushing the bike at slower than walking speed), that my knee was sore afterward.

It was a little cold and windy to start but eventually warmed up and turned into a nice day.

The rest of the story is in the pictures below.

Five Boro Ride Waiting at the start. Looking to the starting banner. Between where we were and the start was the VIP section reserved for people with special reasons to be there including paying extra! Five Boro Ride Beth tried to get out of the wind in the bus shelter.

Five Boro Ride Once we got started we rode to Astoria Park rest stop about 20 miles into the ride. This view includes the railroad bridge at the north end of the park. Five Boro Ride A shot in the direction of the East River including the long lines for the porta-potties.
Five Boro Ride A shot toward Queens. Guess what. Those are still the lines to the porta-potties. After Astoria Park we rode to the end at Fort Wadsworth. We didn't stay long or take any photos because we wanted to beat the crowds.
